What is the difference between a household AC contactor and a commercial AC contactor?

The core and coil are crucial components of an AC contactor. Eddy currents are present in the electromagnet core, which is why it is constructed by individually making and stacking multiple cores together. Additionally, a short-circuit ring is incorporated into the electromagnet core to prevent electromagnetic release at the zero crossing moment. The coil in an AC contactor has a smaller number of turns but carries a higher current, necessitating a thicker wire diameter.

 

In contrast, the DC contactor has a solid iron core with a slender coil consisting of a significantly larger number of turns. Mixing up the connectivity of AC and DC contactors can have severe consequences. Connecting DC power to an AC contactor will result in immediate wire burning. Conversely, when AC power is connected to a DC contactor, the contactor will be unable to attract to the iron core and coil, hindering its functionality.

 

To summarize, the electromagnet cores in AC contactors are stacked together individually to counteract eddy currents. A short-circuit ring is added to avoid electromagnetic release during zero crossing. AC contactors feature a smaller number of coil turns with heavier wire diameter to accommodate higher currents.
